We started implementing power monitoring during the 2024 season. During this season, any new built locally powered controllers (K8, K16, etc) had Shelly 1PM's added to be able to remotely reboot the controller. In addition, we started adding Shelly Plug's to remote switches to be able to automatically reboot the switch if it lost connection to the headend.
For the 2025 season, we expanded this and added Shelly 1PM's inline to anywhere the show connects to AC power. We build custom 2' extensions that have a Shelly 1PM mounted inline with a tripple tap outlet on the output. The inital plans for this was to be able to get a true power usage reading for the show. A happy accident we discovered is the Shelly 1PM has a over-current monitor. This will automatically shut the unit off if it exceeds it's rated 16A. This has proven extremely useful when extension cords or power supplies fail.
All Shelly units in the show report their power usage via MQTT. We are using InfluxDb to subscribe to the shared topic and gather usage metrics. Currently we are visualizing the data in InfluxDb but plan to move to Grafana for next season. In addition, the data is presented in ShowMon.
